Diving With Whalesharks & Manta Rays Was Cooler Than Any 5-🌟 Resort

For us, travel has always been about chasing those feel alive moments — the ones that push us out of our comfort zone and leave us buzzing with excitement long after it’s over. And as scuba divers, the ocean is kind of our happy place 🤿.

If you’ve never tried scubadiving, seriously, you need to. It’s like entering another universe 🌊🐚— no gravity, you’re flying around like a superhero, the surface becomes your sky, and below you? Just endless blue, packed with all kinds of colourful and wonderful creatures 🦀.

But one of our ultimate bucket list dreams has always been to 🐳 Dive with whale sharks and a whole squadron of manta rays (yes, a group of manta rays is called a squadron, which makes them sound even cooler).

🧩 Enter: The Maldives.

And I know what you’re thinking… Maldives? Isn’t that like, overwater bungalows, honeymoon, and selling-your-kidney level expensive?

Well, no, it doesn’t have to be.

We stayed on this little local island called Dharavandhoo at the cutest boutique hotel called Athirige — and it only cost us 75 CAD a night including breakfast. And with all the money we saved not sleeping in a floating villa with glass floors, we went all in on diving and freediving (without oxygen tank) trips.

Every day was a new adventure — heading out on a boat, scanning the water, hoping to catch a glimpse of that epic manta squadron. Nature is wild and unpredictable, which made it all the more thrilling. And then…

It happened.

We found them.

We jumped in.

And it was straight-up magic.

And then, WHALE SHARK!!

Honestly, words don’t really do it justice… so I’ll let the video do the talking.

Ok South America, you blew us away. The past few months we’ve been traveling through South America and honestly, it’s been incredible. Culture, landscapes, experiences—you name it, this part of the world has it. We started with two months in Mexico learning Spanish and practicing salsa and bachata. After a couple of months though, we were speaking well enough to make local friends—and even confident enough to join a dance troupe! From there we went to Colombia to keep at it, and then headed...
