Business Class flight + Our travel hacking secrets!

✅ Only 10 hours into our worldwide trip and we got to check off our first Bucketlist experience: 🛫 Flying business class with a lay flat bed. In fact, we got to experience one of the best business-class seats in the world with Singapore Airlines 🇸🇬.

We started from Montreal to London, flying Air Canada economy. Then the 12-hour flight from London to Singapore, and 2 hours from Singapore to Ho Chi Minh City were in the exclusive Business class seats. And boy did we feel the difference!

Not only were the SA lay-flat beds amazing, but also their quality of service and attention to detail. The Singapore Airlines attendants would always be smiling, would learn your name and take care of you as if you were guests in their home, and the food + drinks were just way beyond our expectations.

The 14 hours of flight with Singapore Airlines went through in a flash and we even got to chat and learn from one of the flight attendants who originally was from Kazakhstan. They even gifted us these two Disney-exclusive teddy bears!

The final bonus was the included access to the airport lounges between flights. Care to guess what our last meal in Montreal was while waiting in the YUL lounge?...Our final ode to Montreal = 🍟 Poutine + 🥪 smoked meat sandwich.

💸 All this sounds fancy and expensive huh? Well, the sweetest part is that we paid for our entire flight itinerary with points. These flights added together would’ve cost about 18,000$ for the two of us, but instead we paid only 200$ + points.

Ho Chi Minh City

🇻🇳 Ho Chi Minh City was so vibrant and alive! Filled with beautiful architecture, incredible street food, and an undeniable sense of cultural pride and strength, the communal atmosphere was palpable.

Our arrival in Saigon also coincided with their Lunar New Year, Têt 🌼. Bright yellow flowers decorating the entranceways of each home, the streets strung with countless red banners, the locals lining the streets dressed in their best red “Ao Dai” (traditional Vietnamese dresses).

👨‍👩‍👦‍👦The ambiance was absolutely and positively infectious and we were touched by the overwhelming atmosphere of community.

🎁 Seeing the red envelopes given to family signalling luck, lion dance performances blessing the fortune of local businesses, and the constant exchange of blessings among each other, reminded us of just how important the human connection is.

❤️ So we want you to make a promise to yourself to make time for each other and never take for granted the people we have around us. The final regrets of most elders never seem to involve business or money decisions but instead, it was always about not having made more time for the people they love.

Cu Chi Tunnels - Story of the Vietnam War

⏳ When traveling, it is important to not only witness what is beautiful and glamorous, but also take the time to experience what is authentically local. In the case of Saigon, it is inescapable to feel the weight of their history and the years of trauma from the Vietnam War.

Being from North America, we were always taught one narrative of the story. Shown in history textbooks, stories, and Hollywood movies, it was the only perspective we knew. 📖 Stepping into the local War Remnant Museum and experiencing firsthand the Cu Chi tunnels as told from a war veteran, we learned a different perspective. And it is impossible to not be affected by stories of the atrocities of War.

The Cu Chi tunnels were an extensive network of narrow underground tunnels used by the Vietcong during the war to fight against the United States. These were hidden deep within the jungle, a network extending over 250km, allowing the villagers to defend their land undetected.

🐜 These tunnels were 40cm high by 50cm wide (so you can only really crawl through them) and were built with incredible ingenuity. Air vents were constructed with bamboo poles camouflaged within termite mounds, additional tunnels were made to funnel out rain water and flooding, cooking vents were pushed into piles of leaves to dissipate the smoke, attack bunkers were hidden in mounds, even medical wards were built in one of three levels of the underground network. Additionally, the Vietcong and villagers were not well equipped with weapons so they had to create booby traps utilizing sharpened bamboo poles.

🤕 We experienced crawling just 50m through these tunnels and the heat, humidity, and darkness were insufferable. But these soldiers stayed there for years and years to fight the war.

🟠 Unfortunately, even after the war was over, the people of Vietnam (and some US veterans) still continue to suffer due to the permanent chemical effects of Agent Orange, a herbicidal compound used by the US military during the war. For the Vietcong who fought from within the tunnels, the surviving have permanent blindness, deafness, or lung cancer from the prolonged exposures.

Regardless of which version of history is accurate, the Cu Chi tunnels stand as an example of the horrors of war.
