💰 What we spent traveling the world for a year (all in)

Welcome Back Travelers!

If you’ve been with us from the start, you probably know the story — we used to live in Montreal, ran our own physiotherapy clinic, and then one day decided, you know what? Let’s hit pause on the 9 to 5 and build a life that actually fits us. Since February 2024, we’ve been slow-traveling full-time around the world and have explored 18 new countries so far — from Asia to Africa to Europe to South America!

But you might be thinking:

“Wait, that must cost a fortune, right?” 💰💰💰

Well… not necessarily.

It all depends on how and where you travel. Sure, if you’re doing overwater bungalows in the Maldives every other week — yeah, you’ll need a Kardashian budget. But for mid-range travel (our style), it’s totally doable.

But you’re probably wondering: “Well that’s all relative, so how much DOES it cost?”

Last year we spent about 6,000 CAD (~4,300 USD) per month for both of us.

That includes flights, hotels, food, activities, data plans, even our laundry bill. And yeah, it might still sound like a lot at first. But keep in mind this covers EVERYTHING, from the regular living expenses, to all our ‘fun out there exploring the world and chasing after lions on a safari’ costs.

Then compare it to what most of us spend just existing back home — rent, bills, car, groceries, weekend takeout — it’s actually not that different.

And no, we’re not sleeping in cockroach-infested hostels to make it work.

When I was back visiting Montreal, I showed a friend the hotel we stayed at in Vietnam for only $28 CAD/night and his jaw hit the floor. (No joke. You can see it for yourself — not the jaw, the hotel - we linked it below if you don’t believe me!)

So is traveling the world expensive? It can be — but it really doesn’t have to.

For us, it ended up costing just a bit more than our normal “life” in Montreal… except now we’re soaking in Onsens in Japan and chasing after the MilkyWay in the Atacama Desert, instead of waiting in line at Costco.

Just last night, I saw a video of a woman from the US who moved to Chengdu, China to teach English. She now makes 30k a year and lives more comfortably than she ever did back home.

Stories like that remind us: There’s no ONE way to live — but sometimes it takes a bit of courage to rewrite your script.

Back with more Japan tips — courtesy of our many small mistakes 😂 Let’s be honest: traveling to Japan is incredible… but also a full-on culture shock. Between the futuristic trains, completely foreign language, unspoken social rules, and customs that are completely different from anywhere else we’ve traveled, visiting Japan can be overwhelming, even for experienced travelers. On our first trip, we made so many small mistakes. We got confused by train systems (and missed our train), broke...

Back with more Japan Tips—this time, Kyoto beyond the temples! Kyoto is one of Japan’s most famous cities… which also means it’s crowded—like, really crowded. If you just go chasing temples and the Instagram-famous spots, you’ll miss the part that makes Kyoto truly special. That’s why we created a different kind of guide. Instead of a long list of things to 'see', we focused on hands-on, immersive experiences that let you feel the culture and traditions of Japan. From forging your own...

Happy New Year! 🎉 We hope 2026 brings you a year full of adventure, meaningful experiences, and moments that change the way you see the world. They say travel is the only thing you spend money on that actually makes you richer—and honestly, we couldn’t agree more. Travel pulls you out of your comfort zone, opens your mind to new ways of thinking, challenges you in the best possible way, and connects you not only with other people, but with nature and with yourself. More than anything, travel...
